Closing out the season, we highlight the contributions of trailblazing Latina composer Alice Gomez, featuring 112 Degrees, written for the Michigan Philharmonic, and celebrate the homecoming of oboist Nermis Mieses. Mieses, the Phil’s former principal oboe, is a renowned artist and distinguished member of the Michigan State University faculty. 112 Degrees is a composition that took shape reflecting the discomfort of living through a hot San Antonio summer.

About Nermis Mieses: Nermis Mieses is Associate Professor of Oboe at Michigan State University and on the faculty of the Sewanee Summer Music Festival. A Loree Artist, she maintains an active international career as a soloist, recitalist, and masterclass presenter. Her artistic work reflects a commitment to expressive depth, tonal refinement, and historically informed approaches to repertoire spanning the Baroque to the 21st century. Equally devoted to orchestral and chamber performance, she served as Principal Oboe of the Detroit Opera and the Michigan Philharmonic Orchestra. Her orchestral collaborations include appearances with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, National Repertory Orchestra, Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, Sphinx Organization orchestras, ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Lexington Philharmonic.
About Alice Gomez: Alice Gomez has served as Composer-In‐Residence with the award-winning San Antonio Symphony, the Midland‐Odessa Symphony, the Performing Arts Center of Gallup, New Mexico, and the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, a renowned Chicano music and arts center in Texas. Gomez has received numerous composer awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Internationally recognized for her concert music, compositions, musical talent and creativity, Gomez’s contributions to a multitude of musical genres are widely acclaimed.
